DC3 Plane Wreck, Vansittart Bay

Hidden among the coastal scrub near Vansittart Bay lies the remarkably preserved wreckage of a Douglas DC3 aircraft, a relic from World War II. The plane came down in 1942 after striking a tree during a mission, and its remains now rest quietly in the red earth, surrounded by paperbark and pandanus.

Reaching the site involves a short walk across country — a chance to imagine the dramatic history and resilience behind this remote place. The wreck has become part of the landscape, softened by time and nature’s touch.

This area lies within the traditional lands of the Wunambal Gaambera people, whose deep connection to Country brings another layer of meaning to the visit, a reminder of both the Kimberley’s history and its enduring spirit.
