One of the questions we are most often asked is:
“How do you get into all those remote rivers, mangrove systems and hidden corners of the Kimberley?”
The answer lies in understanding tides, vessel design, local knowledge and more than 26 years of experience exploring one of the most dynamic coastlines on Earth.
As a small boat Kimberley cruise operator, Discovery One was purpose-built for exploration. Our mission has never been simply to travel through the Kimberley. It has always been to get closer to it.
To feel it.
To understand it.

To experience it in a way that few people ever do.
The Kimberley Moves with the Tides
The Kimberley coastline experiences some of the largest tidal movements on Earth, with tidal ranges regularly exceeding 11 metres.
These tides shape everything.
They flood mangrove forests, expose vast mudflats, fill hidden creeks and transform entire landscapes twice every day. Rivers become accessible and then retreat. Waterfalls change character. Channels open and close.
In the Kimberley, access is determined not by roads or infrastructure, but by water.
Understanding these tidal cycles is at the heart of every successful Kimberley cruise. Timing is everything. Knowing when a river can be entered, when a creek can be explored or when wildlife is most active comes from experience built over decades.

Purpose-Built for Discovery
Discovery One was designed specifically for operating in remote Kimberley waters.
With a shallow draft and expedition-style design, we can safely navigate areas that larger vessels often cannot access. In many locations, we are able to take the mothership itself deep into river systems, narrow channels and sheltered inlets.
When conditions and tides align, we can even navigate into areas around Montgomery Reef that many visitors only experience from a distance.
Our custom-built expedition tenders extend that capability even further.
Powered by 150 horsepower Yamaha outboards and built with shallow-draft fibreglass hulls, they allow us to explore winding creeks, mangrove systems and hidden waterways that would otherwise remain inaccessible.
As the tide rises, we quietly glide into these places.
As the tide falls, we often allow the current to carry us gently back out.
There is no rush.
The journey itself becomes part of the experience.

A Living Library of Knowledge
The Kimberley is not a destination that reveals itself easily.
Its secrets are learned over years, sometimes generations.
This knowledge is carefully documented and passed from captain to captain and from crew member to crew member.
Over more than 26 years, Discovery One has built a living library of local knowledge, observations, tidal information, wildlife records, anchorage notes and cultural guidance. Each season adds to that knowledge, and each generation of crew contributes to it.
Whether exploring Montgomery Reef, the Buccaneer Archipelago, Prince Regent River, Horizontal Falls or one of the countless unnamed creeks and inlets scattered throughout the Kimberley coast, local knowledge makes all the difference.
We know where particular bird species nest each season. We know which mangrove systems regularly attract saltwater crocodiles. We know where turtles surface, where dolphins hunt and where the best opportunities for wildlife encounters occur without disturbing the animals.
More importantly, we know when.
Knowing where to be and when to be there is often the difference between simply seeing the Kimberley and truly experiencing it.
Respecting Country
We also understand that these places are not simply tourist destinations.
They are part of a living cultural landscape that has been cared for by Traditional Owners for thousands of years.
Discovery One operates within the framework established by Traditional Owners, Kimberley Marine Parks and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. We recognise that access to Country is a privilege, not a right.
Many of the places we visit are locations where visitors are welcomed. Other places remain private, culturally significant or unsuitable for visitation and are respected as such.
Part of our role is helping guests understand that the Kimberley is more than spectacular scenery. It is a place where culture, wildlife, tides and landscape remain deeply connected.
By working respectfully with Traditional Owners, marine park managers and local communities, we help ensure these extraordinary places remain protected for future generations.

Wildlife Encounters Without the Crowds
Some of the most memorable moments in the Kimberley happen far away from the headline attractions.
A crocodile basking on a mud bank.
A Brahminy Kite circling above a mangrove creek.
A kingfisher diving from an overhanging branch.
Dolphins feeding on a turning tide.
The sound of nothing but wind, water and birdlife.
Because Discovery One carries only a small number of guests, we have the flexibility to slow down, linger longer and immerse ourselves in the moment.
We are not trying to tick off a list of attractions.
We are exploring a living landscape.
The Discovery One Difference
Many Kimberley cruises show guests the Kimberley.
Our goal is to help guests feel connected to it.
That means following the tides rather than fighting them.
Travelling slowly enough to notice the details.
Drawing on decades of accumulated local knowledge.
Exploring hidden waterways with purpose-built vessels.
Respecting Country and the people who have cared for it for millennia.
And creating experiences that leave guests with a deeper understanding of this remarkable part of Australia.
After more than 26 years exploring the Kimberley coast, we have learned that access is not about speed.
It is about knowledge.
It is about timing.
