You’ve seen the photographs. Waterfalls, remote beaches, spectacular rock formations and little boats heading off to explore.
It looks wonderful. But perhaps you’re wondering: Will I manage getting into the tender? How difficult are the walks? What happens if I need a slower day?
These are sensible questions, and we’re happy to talk them through.
You don’t need to be an athlete to enjoy a Discovery One Kimberley cruise.
Being comfortable walking up and down a flight of stairs is a useful starting point. You also need to consider your balance, your ability to step between the vessel and a tender, and how you feel walking on uneven ground.
Our crew offer practical support, take things steadily and help you understand what each outing involves. With just 21 guests, there is time to get to know you and room for you to enjoy the adventure at your own pace.
We use the tenders every day
Our tenders are a big part of what makes our small boat Kimberley cruises so special. They take us along waterways, into sheltered creeks and towards places that invite a closer look.
Because we use them daily, feeling comfortable boarding a tender is an important consideration when choosing your cruise.
You’ll need to negotiate steps and transfer between the main vessel and a tender that can move with the water. Depending on the landing, getting ashore may involve sand, rocks or an uneven surface.
We explain what to do, offer a steadying hand and give you time to find your footing. Tell us if you feel uncertain. It is much easier to help when we know what you need.
Our crew can assist with boarding and balance where safe, but you should not expect to be lifted or carried. If you think you may need that level of assistance, please speak with us before booking.
What are the walks like?
The Kimberley is wonderfully undeveloped. That also means the terrain does not always make things easy.
Depending on the excursion, you may encounter sandy beaches, uneven rocks, natural steps, slopes or slippery surfaces near water. Heat can make even a relatively short walk feel more demanding than it would at home.
The question is less about how many kilometres you can walk and more about how comfortably you manage unfamiliar ground.
Can you step up and down with control? Take your time over an uneven surface? Stay comfortable on your feet while stopping to look, listen and explore?
You do not need to hurry. Our crew allow time and offer support where it is practical and safe. A slower pace also gives you more opportunity to notice the details: a bird, a pattern in the sandstone or something you would otherwise have walked straight past.
Before heading out, ask us about the terrain and what the outing involves. We want you making an informed choice, feeling comfortable rather than pressured.
Helping hands make a difference
Sometimes reassurance is as valuable as physical support.
A crew member beside you, a hand to hold and a moment to work out your next step can make an unfamiliar situation feel much more manageable.
That personal attention is one of the pleasures of a Kimberley small group cruise. We get to know the people travelling with us, including who likes to take things slowly and who appreciates an extra hand.
It’s a lovely example of what was possible for that particular guest, on that particular journey. It is not a promise that every injury or mobility limitation can be accommodated. Conditions, individual ability and the support required all matter.
If you are recovering from an injury or use a walking aid, let’s have a conversation before you book. An honest discussion helps us work out whether the trip is a good fit.
Do I have to join every excursion?
Absolutely not.
Discovery One offers active days, with opportunities to head out exploring multiple times per day. But you do not have to say yes to every outing.
If one excursion in a day is enough, you can choose to stay onboard for another. Read, enjoy the scenery or simply take a little time to yourself while the others are out. There is no need to keep up with someone else’s holiday.
You might feel energetic one morning and prefer a quieter afternoon. Another day, an excursion may sound particularly appealing and you’ll be ready to join in again.
Talk with the crew about your plans so they know you’re staying aboard and can explain what arrangements apply while the tenders are away.
The aim is to enjoy the journey, with enough energy left to appreciate it.
What about swimming?
For many guests, the possibility of a swim in a freshwater pool is one of the great attractions of a Kimberley cruise.
Swimming is optional. You can enjoy the setting without getting in.
Where swimming is offered, consider both the swim itself and the route to the water. Access may involve uneven or slippery rocks, and getting out can take more effort than getting in.
Swimming opportunities depend on the itinerary and conditions. Only enter the water at locations the crew has assessed and approved for swimming, and follow their instructions. The Kimberley is crocodile country; a beautiful stretch of water is not automatically a safe swimming place.
If swimming is important to your holiday, tell us when choosing your departure. We can explain the opportunities without promising conditions nature may not provide.
Is the stairs test enough?
Being able to walk up and down a flight of stairs is a helpful guide, but it is not the whole picture.
Stairs at home are usually stationary and predictable. A boat, tender or rocky landing can require different balance and movement.
Before booking, tell us about walking aids, recent injuries, significant balance difficulties or any assistance you need day to day. We can then discuss the vessel, tender transfers and excursions in practical terms.
You know your own body. We know the journey. Bringing those two perspectives together is the best way to make a confident decision.
Come with curiosity – and tell us what you need
Our approach is warm, patient and practical. We offer helping hands, take time and encourage you to speak up when you need support.
You can enjoy an adventurous Kimberley coast cruise without being the fastest walker or joining every activity. What matters is choosing a journey you can participate in safely and comfortably.
Call Rose on 1800 996 717 or explore our Kimberley cruises. Tell us what you’re comfortable doing and what concerns you. We’ll help you decide whether Discovery One is right for you.
Nature still feels immense here. Still powerful. Still wonderfully beyond human control.
